The 2007 MecDec Commemoration

The May 20th Society seeks to educate Mecklenburg on the area’s rich history.

Re-enactors parade through UptownWhile we all enjoy freedom, we can’t fully appreciate it without knowledge of the struggles and sacrifices that helped create and ensure it. The May 20th Society is dedicated to educating and reminding our society of Mecklenburg’s revolutionary beginning. Through public events, exhibits and the building of monuments, our history can remain vibrant today. Each generation can learn the stories and participate in celebrations.

But to truly keep our independent spirit and attitude alive, we encourage public and private discussion about liberty, human rights and the tremendous possibilities that a free society offers us all. The citizens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg can continue to make history by embracing these philosophies through words and actions – as individuals, businesses and other organizations.

Celebrating the Spirit of MecDec is not a new endeavor. The first festivities date back to 1822 and have since drawn the attendance of four sitting US Presidents. Make 2007 your year to join in. Visit our Calendar of Events to find out how to join the celebration!
